What order to apply your skincare

17 August 2026

If you have ever stood in front of a shelf of bottles wondering which one goes first, the convention is simpler than it looks.

Thinnest to thickest

The widely used rule is to apply products from the lightest texture to the heaviest. A watery essence spreads easily over bare skin; it does not spread easily over a rich cream. Working light to heavy just means each layer can actually reach the skin.

A common morning order looks like this:

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner or essence
  3. Serum or ampoule
  4. Moisturiser
  5. SPF

In the evening the same order applies, minus the SPF, and often with a cleansing oil or balm before the cleanser.

Give each layer a moment

You do not need to wait several minutes between steps, but letting a layer settle for a few seconds before the next one goes on stops the whole routine sliding around. If your skin feels tacky, that layer has not settled yet.

SPF is always last in the morning

Sunscreen goes on after everything else in your morning routine, as the final layer before makeup. Applying it under a moisturiser dilutes and disturbs the film it is meant to form.

Reapplication through the day matters more than most people expect, particularly in UAE sun and particularly if you are outdoors or near water.

Fewer steps is a valid routine

A ten-step routine is a style, not a requirement. A cleanser, a moisturiser and a sunscreen is a complete routine, and it is a far better one than an elaborate shelf you use inconsistently.

Adding one product at a time also makes it obvious which product caused a reaction. Introducing four at once tells you nothing.

A note

This article is general information about skincare practice, not medical advice, and it does not describe what any particular product will do for you. Cosmetics are not medicines. Patch-test anything new, follow the manufacturer's directions, and speak to a doctor or pharmacist if you have a skin condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or use prescription treatments.
